Tomorow We'll eat Vegetables

I.A.I.L.A., Los Angeles, 2017

Curator: Sagi Refael

Coming to a residency in Southern California at I.A.I.L.A, Run by my best friend Sagi Refael, caught me in the middle of a Menopause crisis followed by symptoms of L.B.D that me and my life partner (which also deals with a menopause crisis herself) are trying to fight and  handle.

Sagi’s innovative idea to host Israeli artists, some are close friends, at his and his  husband’s home in LA for an art residency, had partially put me in the midst of their  newlywed intimacy. This month of being away from home, having long distance disputes and  making ups with my partner,  while being absorbed in Sagi’s and Eric’s lives, made it clear to  me that this Californian retreat would mainly surface my main issues from back home:  relationships, intimacy, love.

In a text work I published in 2009 to accompany my artist book  “imaginary friends”, I suggested a conceptual proposal for a basic law, meant to be legally  recognized, that love must get along. This idea came back in the new paintings done on the  Californian roads - SF, LA, PS: Ways of dealing with  the horror of being bored in a  relationship or being abandoned in love. Figures that are laying down either in private or  public surroundings. A young and worried couple on the bench viewed by older bourgeois  selves with mixed feelings. Planning a vegetarian dinner while resting in the Korean spa.  Even some self portraits, in the pool in Palm Springs or calling home from bed. All are trying to handle all those feelings that consume what’s known as ‘love’.

And, there are other Love  and relationships here, the coupleness of an artist and a curator, that in this particular case  are going many years back. After a month of living ,traveling, sleeping, drinking and listening  to ABBA together, sometimes the works are beginning to have a small element of a  collaboration- me painting an image Sagi noticed and brought to my attention, or took in my  cellphone cam, or suggested that I’ll look at. Well, anyhow, all this love had  the Californian blue sky above ,a pool, and naturally some palm trees .
